Des sacs chargés de mémoire
Abstracts
Bags Laden with Memories. From Playing Drums to Silent Resistance Among the Wa of Xuelin (Yunnan). -- During the Cultural Revolution, religious activities were severely restricted in China. The repression of the cults coincided with the appearance of geometrical patterns on the bags worn by the Wa, former headhunters living along the border with Myanmar. The symbolism of these designs is analyzed by using data collected during fieldwork in Xuelin (Yunnan). As it turns out, these designs represent sexed pair of drums as well as the most typical purposes and procedures of rites, which used to mark social activities for regenerating life and expelling evil spirits. Questions are raised about the deep meaning of these designs, as well as their appearance on the bags.
